A young man's father dies of cancer and the boy has to cope with the loss. A poem, recited by Ian McKellen, builds the framework for the storyline and is interrupted from time to time by the thoughts and experiences of the boy, voiced by Joseph Fiennes. The result is a film about the time-consuming process of overcoming grief, with all its ups and downs, setbacks, and silver linings.
