Becky
Midnight
Feature | USA | 100 MINUTES | EnglishAction, Thriller
It was supposed to be a bonding weekend for 13-year-old Becky Hooper (Lulu Wilson) and her widower father (Joel McHale). She’s hoping to feel love from her dad in the wake of her mother’s passing, which shut Becky down emotionally; he sees an opportunity for her to warm up to his new girlfriend, who Becky hasn’t warmed to yet. None of that happens, however, once four dangerous strangers fresh off a jailbreak show up at their lake house’s front door, led by the maniacal Dominick (Kevin James). Their arrival quickly triggers violence, and Becky is forced to try to save the day—by any means possible.
On paper, Becky seems risky: think First Blood, but with a teenage girl going to war against James in a humorless turn as the sadistic villain. Well, the risk has paid off. Powered by their cast’s all-in performances, directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion mined that setup for pure carnage-laden, action-thriller gold with the lean and mean Becky. Once the final pool of blood settles, you’ll respect Wilson’s name.—Matt Barone
Cast & Credits
Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott
The less you know about Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott the better. After three features, they can make a sentence out of the titles: Becky (Kevin James, Lulu Wilson, Joel McHale, and Amanda Brugel) got Cooties (Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, Alison Pill, and Jack McBrayer) in Bushwick (Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow).
