Bob and David Climb Machu Picchu
Spotlight Documentary
Feature Documentary | United States | 80 MINUTES | EnglishBiography, Comedy, Documentary, Nature, Road Movie
Bob Odenkirk and David Cross have been friends, collaborators and comedy legends for decades. When David pitched a bucket-list hike to Machu Picchu, Bob said yes on the spot, his recent heart attack perhaps making the idea feel more urgent than crazy. What follows is a weeks-long, high-altitude journey along one of the world's most grueling trails, scored by gorgeous Andean scenery, fueled by coca leaves and the kind of humor only these two could generate. As they climb higher, the comedy gives way to something deeper: candid conversations about their partnership, their careers, the feast-and-famine of show business and the fragility of life itself.
It's been compared to My Dinner with Andre, except with two guys who are sillier and significantly more winded. What makes the film so disarming is how the physical challenge strips away performance and gets at something real. Their rapport has deepened with age, and Bob's brush with death gives their journey a weight that earns every laugh. Endearing, surprisingly moving and thoroughly in sync, Bob and David Climb Machu Picchu is a comedy road movie about friendship, mortality and the enduring magic of two people who still crack each other up after all these years.—Jarod Neece
